Bettie Effie Phipps, 90, of Galesburg, died on June 2, 2019 at her home. Bettie was born on August 23, 1928 at the family home in Knox County. She was the daughter of James and Carrie (Meadows) Hook. She married Hillard L. Phipps on August 24 , 1946 in Monmouth. Together they celebrated 62 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on October 22, 2008. Bettie is survived by her eight children, Sharon Witt of Galesburg, Stanley (Sherry) Phipps of Arizona, Steven Phipps of Galesburg, Pam Widener of Monmouth, Ron Phipps of Galesburg, Larry Phipps of Galesburg, Danny Joe Phipps of Galesburg and Rita Yocum of Roseville; five brothers, Jim Hook of Abingdon, Robert Hook of Galesburg, John Hook of Texas, Jess Hook of the Quad Cities and David Hook of Burlington; two sisters, Anna Homer of Monmouth and Donna Gray of Abingdon; and ten grandchildren. Along with her husband, Bettie was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Leonard, Howard, Herb and Henry; and two sisters, her twin Bessie, Eddie Lee. Bettie was a homemaker. She was a hard worker and she made sure to keep her eight children in line while they were growing up. Bettie was a friend to everybody she met. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019, from 2-4 PM, at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. A private entombment of cremated remains will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted with Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorials may be donated to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
