Betty Lou Swigert

Betty Lou Swigert, 85, of Galesburg, died at 9:41 am Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Galesburg.  Betty was born on September 29, 1930 in Galesburg, the daughter of Jesse and Isabelle (Young) Jones. She married Willard D. Swigert on October 5, 1947 in Knoxville. He preceded her in death on December 6, 2001. She is survived by her two sons, Gary of Galesburg and Terry (Luan) of Monmouth; a sister, Shirley Hiler of Kona, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Amy (Wes) Arteaga of Monmouth, Rebecca (Jeremy) Fenton of Monee, IL, Andrew (Melissa) Swigert of Tulsa, OK, and Rachel Swigert of Monmouth; and, nine great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, and a sister, Dorothy.  Betty worked at Sudzy’s Laundromat for a number of years, but what she loved doing the most was being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was an avid collector of bells, and in her free time she loved to crochet; but, her favorite past time of all was spending time with her family. Betty was full of life and spirit and will be missed by those who love her.     Per her request, cremation rites will be accorded. A private family graveside service will be held at Linwood Cemetery, Saturday, March 5,2016. A Celebration of Life for Betty will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2016 from 3-5 p.m., at 798 Day Street, Galesburg. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Per the family’s request, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.
