Carol Ann Hughs, 76, of Galesburg, died peacefully at 8:08 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2019 at Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville. Carol was born February 22, 1943 in Kankakee, the daughter of Bert Grove and Mary Emily (Lake) Etzel. She married Armand Dean Hughs November 29, 1963 in Galesburg. Dean preceded her in death on December 5, 2012. Carol is survived by two daughters, Gayle (and Rick) Mejia and Amy (and Chad) Simmons both of Galesburg; three grandchildren, Lauren Triplett of Knoxville, Scot Mejia of Schaumburg, and Connor Simmons of Galesburg; and great grandchildren, Myah, Maddison, and Harper Triplett, and Riley Waymoth. Carol is also survived by one brother, James (Patty) Etzel of Alexis. Along with her husband, Carol was preceded in death by her parents. After graduating high school Carol attended design school in Chicago. Carol was extremely artistic. She enjoyed painting and quilting along with knitting and belonged to the knitting guild. Family was the most important thing in her life. Although she didn’t work outside the home, she spent her life taking care of her family.Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg with memorial services following at 11 a.m. Pastor Glen Bocox will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Knox County Nursing Home, or a charity of the donor’s choosing.
