Charles L. Sloan, 69, of Galesburg, died at 3:53 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2011 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center. Charlie was born on February 4, 1942 in Muscatine, Iowa the son of Harry A. and Muriel R. (Ferguson) Sloan. Charlie spent his youth in New Boston, Illinois. He married Sharon Thompson. They later divorced. He then married Debbie M. Ryan on September 11, 1976 in New Boston, Illinois. Charlie is survived by his wife, Debbie of Galesburg; a daughter, Sabrina Sloan Stroops of Galesburg; and a grandson, Levi Sloan Stroops of Galesburg. Charlie attended the Chrysler Automotive Trade School and then worked at Nate Learners Chrysler in Rock Island for several years. He then worked on his family farm for several years. He last worked for Anderson Trucking Service as a truck driver, retiring in 1998. He attended Rozetta Baptist Church. Charlie never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His giving continued after his death, as he was a tissue donor. Charlie enjoyed working on and collecting cars. He loved spending time with his family especially his only grandchild, Levi. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at Watson Funeral Home, with Pastor Jim Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at Watson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family for an education fund for Levi or to the Rozetta Baptist Church.
