Charlotte L. Mangieri

Charlotte L. Mangieri, 84, formerly of 1114 N Academy St., died peacefully at 3:30p.m. on January 25, 2010 at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, surrounded by her family.   Charlotte Leah Harms was born on October 30, 1925 in Kankakee, IL, the daughter of Frank J. and Lillie M. (Blanchette) Harms. Charlotte married Robert C. Berry on June 19, 1948 in Champaign, IL. They moved to Galesburg in 1950 and raised two children, Alexis Berry of Chicago, IL and John Berry of Des Moines, IA.   Bob died October 20, 1991.   She married Frank T. Mangieri on April 22, 1995 in Galesburg, IL and welcomed four stepsons and stepdaughters, Greg (Sharon) Mangieri, Becky (Bill) Sheldon, Jeff (Pam) Mangieri and Lori Mangieri-Luper.    Frank died January 21, 2009.   Also surviving are Mary Berry and granddaughter Emma (Micah) Hartley of Des Moines, IA; a brother, Duane Harms of Aroma Park, IL; a sister, Violet Laura Kabot of Torrance, CA, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters, Leroy Harms, Laura Harms, Dolores Duschand and Virgil Harms.   Charlotte attended schools in Kankakee, including the Gallagher School of Business where she studied for two years.  During WWII, she worked in a defense plant inspecting shells until the end of the war. While in Galesburg, Charlotte attended Carl Sandburg College for two years and studied Spanish and Art History. She also worked as a secretary at the Bank of Galesburg. Charlotte was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, its Ladies of Mary Altar and Rosary Society and later, the Corpus Christi Altar and Rosary Society.  She was instrumental in the I.H.M. church prayer line, participated at I.H.M as an extraordinary minister and volunteered in many other church activities.  Charlotte was a member of the Third order of our Lady of Mount Caramel (Lay Carmelites) and had a great devotion to St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower of Jesus. During her lifetime she visited the shrines of Fatima and Lourdes as well as the Vatican. In addition to her religious interests, she enjoyed travel, music, golf and especially ballroom dancing.    Charlotte’s family extends heartfelt thanks to all the compassionate caregivers at Rosewood Care Center, OSF Hospice and Western Illinois Home Health Care.  Bless the hearts of all clergy and dear friends who offered prayers and comfort.   Funeral mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 10:00a.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2010 with Rev. William Miller and Father Deus-Dedit Byabato officiating. Visitation will be held at Watson Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 from 5:00p.m. to 7:00p.m., with the rosary prayed at 7:00p.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Galesburg, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society or Catholic Social Services.
