Chester "Duane" Schoonover

Chester “Duane” Schoonover, 68, of Galesburg, IL passed away at 12:29 am on March 5, 2025 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center.

He was born on July 9, 1956 in Galesburg, IL, the son of Chester Banks and Leveta (Smith) Schoonover. Duane attended Galesburg High School, class of 1974.

Duane dedicated 40 years of his life to BNSF Railway, where he was known for his strong work ethic and sense of humor. In his free time, he had a passion for woodworking, riding his Harley-Davidson, and rooting on the Fighting Illini Men’s Basketball team. He also loved watching movies with his sons, Alex and Nick, and his daughter, Emily.

Duane was a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his mother, Leveta (Smith) Schoonover, and children, Alexander (Emily) Schoonover, Emily Schoonover (Luke Lech), Nicholas Schoonover, Jennifer (Ted) Huff, and Felicia (Nicholas) Brinig. He was also a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, including his beloved grandson, Xander Schoonover. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Roger Schoonover.

Duane’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. A celebration of life will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Galesburg, IL on March 27th from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
