Conrad P. “Pete” Johnson, 89, of Galesburg, died Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg. Pete was born January 29, 1932 in Peoria, Illinois.  He served in the US Navy on the U.S.S. New Jersey during the Korean War.  Pete graduated from Western Illinois University with BA in Business in 1959.  On July 24, 1965, Pete married Sandra Jean Bennis at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lincoln, IL.  Pete had a successful career at Country Companies as commercial underwriter for 39 years, retiring in 1997. Pete is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandy of Galesburg; two sons, Greg (Julie) Johnson of Clarendon Hills, IL and Steve (DeAnna) Johnson of Springfield, IL; and his five beloved grandchildren, Liam, Lally, Matt, Kelsi, and Nick.  Pete was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret; and one sister, Shirley Burton. Pete enjoyed golf and swimming as well as spoiling many family dogs. He was a devoted volunteer with the Galesburg Welcome Center serving as a tour bus guide.  Pete was an avid reader and supporter of the Galesburg Public Library and the Library Foundation.   During retirement, Pete and Sandy enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Europe including numerous winters in Fort Myers Beach.  Pete, along with others in the neighborhood, was instrumental in working with the city to keep the classic streetlights on Bateman St, which he decorated for the Christmas holiday. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Galesburg.  The rosary will be prayed at 11 a.m. at the church with the funeral mass following.  Father Lee Brokaw will officiate.  Cremation will be accorded following mass.  Private family burial of cremated remains will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Corpus Christi Catholic Church or to the Galesburg Public Library Foundation (www.thegplf.org).
