David L. Bernard

David Lynn Bernard, of Abingdon, Illinois, passed away in his home Thursday, February 22, 2024 at the age of 66.

He was born May 28, 1957 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Robert G. Bernard and Elsie M. Bernard. Dave served in the United States Army from 1975 to 1978 as the Welding Shop Sargent in Ft. Hood, TX. Following his service, he earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Welding and Metallurgy from Richland Community College. These experiences supported his career as a welder, carman, foreman, leadman and much more during his 26 years at Norfolk Southern and BNSF Railroads before retiring in 2017.

During retirement, Dave focused on his collecting hobby and owned an online shop to support the expansion of his collections. As a connoisseur of art, sports memorabilia, watches, and model trains, Dave possessed a deep knowledge of history, which he shared through captivating storytelling. He enjoyed casino games and was a skilled card player. He had a passion for Harleys and earned the nickname Dawg, short for Harley Dawg. Dave was an excellent cook and would prepare large, elaborate meals for his family. He also shared his generosity with gift giving, especially to his grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Dave was a loving and devoted grandfather, father, brother, uncle, and friend and his love and laughter will be greatly missed.

Dave is survived by his former wife Jeri Galloway and their children, Dustin Atwood of Frisco, Texas, and Brittany (Justin) Chaney of Wataga, Illinois; and four grandchildren, Carter, Jack, Jace, and Mackenzie Chaney. Also surviving is one brother, Robert Bernard of Boody, Illinois; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog and cat, Diesel and Deuces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Danny Bernard.

Memorial visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Memorial Service with military rites will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
