David R. Severns, 82, of Oquawka, died at 11:04 a.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria. David was born July 22, 1939 in Abingdon, the son of Clarence David and Edris E. (Bowden) Severns. He married Mary Ann Shane on August 16, 1958 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on December 25, 2020. David is survived one son, James (Bobbie) Severns of Keithsburg; three daughters, Connie (Bob) Johnson-Esp of Knoxville, Teresa (Kevin) Mullen of Lakeland, FL, and Leslie Collopy of Galesburg; twenty grandchildren; and thirty great grandchildren. Along with his parents and wife, David was preceded in death by two sons, David, Jr. and Larry. David entered the US Army in November 1956, serving in the 101st Airborne and was honorably discharged in May 1961. He worked as a prentice operator at Koppers in Galesburg for many years. He was a fourth-degree member of Fr. J.O. Hunt Knights of Columbus Council 556, as well as the AMVETS and the Abingdon American Legion. David was a driver for the VA van for several years and performed as Uncle Sam in numerous parades. David also was a past Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Troop Leader. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was a past church trustee. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time on the Mississippi River fishing and enjoyed hunting. Visitation will be 11-12:15 p.m. Monday, October 11, 2021 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Knights of Columbus 4th Degree and Chalice presentation will be at 12:15 p.m. Funeral Mass for David will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with Father Lee Brokaw officiating. Burial with military rites by the Knox County Honor Guard will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A celebration of life in memory of David and Mary Severns will be held at a later date by Mr. & Mrs. James Severns. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
