Dorothy Irene Adams, 88, of Galesburg, died at 2:50 a.m. Thursday, September 6, 2018 at home with her children by her side. Dorothy was born February 6, 1930 in Galesburg, the daughter of Knowles “Pete” and Hazle Louise (Sherman) Boynton. Dorothy married Richard “Red” Adams on May 8, 1954 in Galesburg. Dorothy and Red shared almost 64 years of marriage. Red preceded Dorothy on December 27, 2017. Dorothy is survived by her children; sons, Michael (Dianna) Adams of Knoxville and Dr. James (Kelly) Adams of Peoria; and a daughter, Cynthia Cannon of Galesburg. Dorothy is also survived by two grandsons, Michael (Courtney) Adams of Evansville, WI and Steven (Hannah) Godsil of Galesburg; a great granddaughter, Delaney A. Adams of Evansville, WI and twin great grandchildren due any day. Along with her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by a son in law, Robert D. Cannon. As a young woman, Dorothy worked at Gamble Music Company and at Burlington Truck Lines as a secretary. After marrying Red she became a 24/7 homemaker with no days off, never complaining, with the exception of Wednesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. This was hair do day at the beauty shop. Everyone knew not to park in the driveway and block her exit. Dorothy enjoyed playing the piano and coronet as well as painting and drawing. Growing up in and after the Great Depression college was beyond the means of her family. None the less she made the most of life-long learning taking full advantage of her children’s educations to enrich her own. Typing their papers on an ancient typewriter (likely owned originally by Gutenberg himself) she explored history, philosophy, and the Sciences. Inquisitive to no end, her depth and breadth of knowledge ranged from Al Capone and 1920s Gangland Chicago to genealogy to current events -backward and forwards. She and Red didn’t so much watch the News as monitor it.  Cremation rites will be accorded. Private family services will be at Wataga Cemetery, Wataga, IL. Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Galesburg Railroad Museum.
