Edwin Fred Appel, 89, of Galesburg, died peacefully at his home in Galesburg, on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.

He was born on March 21,1935 in Milledgeville, Illinois, the son of John E. and Francile “Ruth” (Masters) Lawton. After graduating high school, Edwin attended Western Illinois University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in teaching. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. Edwin was a salesman his entire life. He worked at Wilkinson’s Office Supply for over thirty years. After retiring, Edwin kept himself busy doing side jobs but still maintaining his role as a salesman. He also worked for Office Specialty, Knox Office Supply, sold treasures, and wrote articles for antique farm equipment and local flea markets. Edwin married Jessie “Marie” (Pumfrey) Flickinger in Galesburg on January 11, 1980. She preceded him in death on January 27, 2003.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Laura Olson (Roger Radz) of Maquon, Illinois; bonus daughter, Tara (Brent) Hall of Galesburg; one grandson, Justin (Ebonee) Morris of Galesburg; one great-granddaughter, Nateley Morris; his girlfriend of 19 years, Karen Bell of Knoxville; one step-son; and three step-daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; his late wife of 27 years, Marie; one grandson, Michael Olson; and a son-in-law, Steve Olson.

Edwin was a devoted member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited, and Wild Game Preserves. He enjoyed going to flea markets and auctions. Edwin liked farming, hunting, trapshooting, and fishing. He also enjoyed reading, especially diving into history, particularly military history. Edwin loved watching old Western movies and old Western TV series. Every Wednesday, him and Laura would have a daddy/daughter day; spending time together whether it was for a bite to eat or running errands. Edwin had the most gentle and sweet soul. He was a very supportive and all-around amazing dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, boyfriend, and friend. Edwin will be greatly missed.

Cremation will be accorded. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Memorial Contributions may be made to Mayo Clinic for research regarding MAC. We’ll end it with his favorite saying as some of you may know.. “and that’s my story".
