Etel Nemeth, 88, of Galesburg, died peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 at home. Etel was born April 17, 1932 in Vat, Hungary the daughter of Lajos and Margit (Toth) Szukics. Etel married Gyula Nemeth on February 7, 1953 in Csorotnek, Hungary. In 1956 Etel and Gyula escaped during the Hungarian Revolution with their two infant children to Switzerland. They lived in Switzerland until 1965 when they came to the United States and settled in Galesburg. Etel worked as a seamstress at Protexal for 25 years, until retiring in 1991. Etel is survived by two sons, Julius Nemeth of Cincinatti, OH and Attila Nemeth of Galesburg; one daughter, Christine (Charles) Lloyd of Nevada, IA; one brother, Tihamer Szukics of Germany; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren. Gyula preceded Etel in death on November 16, 1997. After retiring, Etel volunteered at the gift shop at OSF St. Mary Medical Center for many years. She was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Ladies of Mary. She was a gracious hostess, always welcoming friends and family. She loved spending time with her family, quilting and gardening. Visitation will be 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2021 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. COVID-19 precautions will be in place. Funeral Mass for Etel will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2021 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Father Lee Brokaw will officiate. Burial will follow mass at St. Joseph Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be directed to the Ladies of Mary, 2401 N. Broad St., Galesburg, IL 61401.
