James Andrew “Butch” Turner, known fondly by friends and family as Jim, passed away on October 30, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on May 7, 1945, in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Mildred McCoy. Mildred died when Jim was 18 months old. He was adopted by his aunt and uncle Doyne E. (Weigert) and Verne L. Turner. Jim was a lifelong learner and a man of deep curiosity.

Following high school Jim enlisted in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1971, including a tour in Vietnam. While working in the A&P Grocery Store, Jim married Trudy Ann Turner. They were married in Galesburg on September 25, 1971. Jim truly adored Trudy to his last day. Their 53 year marriage brought four children all of whom survive, Cheryl (Mark) Ahlberg of Galesburg, Robert (Kim) Turner of Oquawka, Jerald Turner of Springfield, Illinois, and Tina (Steeven) Smith of Galesburg. Jim is also survived by his beloved 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and baby Wade coming in January 2025. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred; parents, Verne and Doyne Turner; and three sisters, Jean, LaWanda, and Patty.

Jim had a long and enjoyable working career. He loved to keep busy. Jim worked at OMC Gale Products for several years until their closure. He went on to work for many years at M&R Oil Gas Station as the manager for many years. It was during this time he attended Western Illinois University. Jim last worked at Froelich House in Galesburg until his retirement.

Jim proudly completed a Bachelor of Science at Western Illinois University in 1993, a testament to his belief in education's timeless value. His passion for stargazing and interests ranging from the marvels of outer space to the intricacies of airplanes fueled his imaginative spirit. A fervent admirer of astronauts and a recent enthusiastic student of the French language, his quest for knowledge was insatiable.

His family delighted in his dry wit and counted on his spirited presence. Jim’s zest for life and endlessly interesting conversations have left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Cremation will be accorded. No funeral services are planned. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.watsonthomas.com.
