James Edwin Mundy, 83, of Galesburg, Illinois died at 1:42 a.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg.
Jim was born March 25, 1939 in Galesburg, the son of Marshall A. and Bernice L. (Wallace) Mundy, Jr.
Jim married Mary Anne England in 1958. They divorced in 1969. Jim is survived by his children, James A. (Wanda) Mundy of Rock Island, Illinois, Michael E. Mundy of Galesburg, and Lynne (David) Schweppe of Freeport, Illinois. Jim is also survived by five grandchildren, Jennifer Hurt, Jason Hurt, Jon (Claire) Schweppe, Kristen (Mark) Reick, and Jacob Schweppe; seven great grandchildren; one brother, John M. Mundy of Galesburg; and three sisters, Jeanette “Sue” Baker of Galesburg, Barbara J. Mundy of Galesburg, and Marsha (Tom) Dean of Knoxville, Illinois. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Daniel in 1999.
Jim graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1957 and went on to serve in the US Army from August 5, 1957 and was honorably discharged on February 4, 1961. He retired from Gates Rubber Co. in 2003 after 40 years of employment.
After retiring from Gates Rubber Co., he enjoyed his retirement years with his family, many friends, and his loving companion, Gloria Gravitt of Galesburg. Jim was affiliated with the Galesburg Labor Day parade for over 20 years. He was an active and longtime member of United Rubber Workers who later joined with United Steelworkers of America Local 2629. He was a faithful member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Galesburg, and enjoyed tending to his gardens.
Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. The rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. Monday, October 10, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with the funeral mass following at 10:30 a.m. Father Ghislain Inai will officiate. Burial with military rites will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society.
