View John's Video Tribute John A. “Farmer John” Swanson, 64, of Galesburg, died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, December 14, 2013 in rural Rio. John was born October 4, 1949 in Galesburg, the son of Herbert and Elizabeth “Betty” (Kounter) Swanson. John graduated from ROVA High School in 1967. He married Cheryl M. Cole on February 14, 1981 in Galesburg. John is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Galesburg; a step son, Dean Kirby of Bushnell; a step daughter, Kim Newkirk of Galesburg; and two sisters, Agnes Swanson of Rio and Virginia (Terry) Allen of Abingdon. He is also survived by three step grandchildren, Kolissa Newkirk, Robbie Newkirk, and Jared Kirby; and one step great granddaughter, Kodi M. Carly. He was preceded in death by his parents. John farmed his entire life. He had a love for tractors and belonged to several tractor clubs including Hart Parr Oliver Collectors, Midwest Oliver Collectors, and the Spoon River Antique Ag Association. He also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing Motorcycle and belonged to the GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Association). He was also a member of the Prairie Drifters Snowmobile Club. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home. Rev. Tom Ek will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home, Galesburg. Memorial contributions can be made in John’s name to ROWVA FFA or Midwest Oliver Collectors.
