GALESBURG --- Mario Medina, 88, of Galesburg was called to Heaven at 6:18 p.m. Monday, October 21 at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg. He was born March 11, 1925 in Avard, OK to Cenobio and Petra Martinez Medina and married to Dorothy Charles on February 4, 1953 at St. Patrick’s Church in Galesburg. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, Philip Medina, Michael Medina, and Steven (Helen) Medina, all of Galesburg; a daughter Susan (Ricky) Wilder of Galesburg; four brothers, Peter Medina, Paul Medina, Juan Medina, and Raymond Medina; a sister, Mary (Manuel) Gutierrez, as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Josephine Medina, Nellie Miranda, and Tillie Ojeda, as well as one brother, Philip Medina. Mario graduated from Galesburg High School in 1943 before serving his country with the United States Navy from 1943 until 1945 in the South Pacific. He worked for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad from 1941 until 1955 and for Maytag from 1956 until he retired in 1987. Mario was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Destroyer Escort Sailor’s Association. A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 25 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The Reverend William T. Miller, IC will officiate. A visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 25 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
