Mary E Sheriff

Mary E. Sheriff, of Galesburg, died at on Monday, August 24, 2009 at Cottage Hospital.   Mary was born on October 27, 1916 in Jarrold’s Valley, WV, the daughter of Stewart R. and Ruth V. Russell Sheriff.  Surviving Mary is several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene on February 25, 1994.    Mary graduated from Whittier College, California and taught school for five years.  She then graduated from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD and worked as a Public Health Nurse with the Los Angeles Community Colleges for thirty three years, retiring in 1981.  She moved to Galesburg in 1991.  She was a member of Central Congregational Church in Galesburg.    A caring and generous person, Mary left a portion of her estate to be used to endow scholarships for students in the Carl Sandburg College nursing program.    A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2009 at Central Congregational Church, Galesburg.  Burial of ashes will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Pasadena, CA. Memorials may be made to Central Congregational Church. Watson Funeral Home, Galesburg is in charge of arrangements.
