Melba Genevieve Sloan, 94, of Galesburg, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at home. Melba was born August 31, 1923 in Galesburg, the daughter of Harold Vernon and Mildred (DuPree) DeLong. She married Robert Stanley Stinson. They later divorced. She then married Roy Sloan. He preceded her in death. Melba is survived by one son, James Stinson of Galesburg; one daughter, Cheryl Adams of Galesburg; eight grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy, two brothers, one sister, and one grandson, Carl Serven, Jr. Melba worked as a CNA in the nursery at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for over 20 years. After retirement, Melba volunteered at the hospital for another 10 years. She was a member of the East Main Congregational Church, Galesburg. Melba was an avid bowler and enjoyed working in her yard tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed the company of her cat, Baby. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2018 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial of cremated remains will be in the spring at Memorial Park Cemetery, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the family for a fund to be designated.
