Michael A. Smith

Michael A.  Smith, 65, of 674 Knox Rd. 1000 N Gilson, died at 9:06 p.m. on Sunday December 17, 2006 at Proctor Hospital, in Peoria.   Michael was born on October 1, 1941 in Alexis, Illinois the son of Woodrow and Mary Thompson Smith.  He  married Janice Hickerson on May 1, 1993 in Orlando, Florida.  Surviving Michael are his wife Janice of Gilson, one step-son Bret (Tracey) Damewood of Winter Park, Florida, one brother Bernard Smith of Avon, and 2 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.   Michael graduated from Knoxville High School in 1959 and from Brown’s Business College in Galesburg.  He served in the United States Air Force from 1964 until 1968.  He worked at Maytag for 42 years, retiring in 2003.  He also had worked part time for 22 years at the Continental Clothing Store in Galesburg, until 1990.  Michael was of the catholic faith, enjoyed antiquing, and was an avid coin collector.  Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 2006 at Alexis Cemetery, Alexis, with the Reverend Ernest Pizzamiglio, officiating.  Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday December 20, 2006 at Watson Funeral Home, Galesburg.  Burial will be in Alexis Cemetery, Alexis, with military honors performed by Harry E. Wiles American Legion, Post #381, Abingdon.  Memorials may be made to the Michael A. Smith Memorial for Cancer Survivors, c/o Community National Bank, Monmouth, Illinois.
