Ramona Gutierrez

Ramona J. Gutierrez, 84, of 353 W. First Galesburg, died at 2:17 a.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Seminary Manor.   Ramona was born on August 14, 1924 in Galesburg, the daughter, of Basilio and Herminia Martinez Gimenez. She married Alejandro Gutierrez on November 7, 1943 in Galesburg. Surviving Ramona are; her husband, Alex of Galesburg; 2 sons, Larry (Rosemarie) and David both of Galesburg; 3 daughters, Dolly Sundell, Esther Fox, and Regina Hodge all of Galesburg; 3 sisters, Lupe Perez, Rachel Vega, both of Galesburg, and Virginia Murguia of Northbrook; and a step son, Raymond (Diana) of Kerrville, TX. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Alex, Jr.; a daughter, Theresa; a grandaughter, Alexis; 6 brothers; and 2 sisters.  Ramona worked at Knox College in housekeeping for 25 years, retiring in 1988. She was a life member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, its Altar and Rosary Society, president of W.A.T.C.H. Board, a member of the Third Order of the Lay Carmelites, a Eucharistic Minister, Northwestern Cursillo, and was a counter at collection. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital including being a member of St. Mary’s Ladies Auxiliary, S.P.E.C., and Relay for Life. She also volunteered and was a member of L.U.L.A.C., a member of Knox County Right to Life, Costa Catholic Academy volunteer, and the Ladies of Mary. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. Sunday at Watson Funeral Home, with the rosary being prayed at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick’s Church or to the LULAC Scholarship fund.
