Raymond Leroy “Butch” Smith, 81, of Galesburg, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, 2:40 PM, at his home. Butch was born on October 4, 1936 in Monmouth, Illinois. He was the son of Oren and Mildred (Sowers) Smith. He married the love of his life, Bette McGahey on May 8, 1956 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death after 59 years of marriage. Butch is survived by two sons, John and James Smith of Galesburg; a sister, Kay Stake of Galesburg; two brothers, Tim and Earl “Skip” Smith of Galesburg; and ten grandchildren. Along with his wife, Butch was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Henrietta Vieretta and Raymie Sue; a son, Kenneth Smith; and a grandson, Logan John. Butch was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He managed Kenny’s Shell station for a number of years, before working as a mechanic at Harvey Bros. Butch retired from Harvey Bros. after forty years of service. He was a very proud baseball coach for the Babe Ruth League in Galesburg. Butch coached during the 70’s while his sons played. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Butch could often be found at home tinkering on various things and projects in his garage. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family meant everything to him and his favorite pastime was spending his minutes, hours, and days with them all. Cremation rites will be accorded. Per Butch’s request, no visitation or funeral services will be planned. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorial may be given to the Knox County Humane Society in Butch’s name.
