Richard E. Terpening, 95, of 2534 N. Seminary St., Galesburg, died at 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday July 18, 2006 at home.   He was born on January 5, 1911 in Coldbrook, Illinois area, north of Coldbrook school the son of Arthur J. Blanche Thorne Ferris Terpening. He first married Lois Gardner.  He later married A. Jane Welch Gardner on February 11, 1963 in Galesburg, she died on January 6, 2004.  Surviving are 2 step daughters:  Julie Gardner Land of Silvis, IL and Sally Gardner Swanson of Galesburg.  Also surviving is one brother Francis Terpening of Clinton, WA.  He is also survived by 5 step grandchildren, John Land of Las Vegas; Daniel Land of Park View, IA; Cassandra Swanson Hansel of St. Louis, MO; Melissa Land Garcia of Hampton, IL; and Jennifer Swanson Hutchings of Louisiana, and 12 step great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by one sister.    Richard went to Barnett Grade School, then to Galesburg High School, then transferred to Monmouth High School and graduated from West Seattle High School in Seattle, WA in 1929.  He went into the cavalry in the U.S. Army in 1941.  He was stationed in Italy during WWII as a building engineer.  He came back to Coldbrook in 1945 when the war ended.  He reentered the service in 1950 fro 2 years and was stationed at Camp Atterberry, IN.  When he returned, he framed on a farm near Monmouth.  He moved to Galesburg in 1950 and began working for Simpson Powelson Lumber Yard and retired from there in 1980.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galesburg.   Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday July 24, 2006 at Watson Funeral Home, with the Reverend Marilyn Anell officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Terpening Cemetery, Warrren County.  Military rites will be conducted by Ralph M. Noble American Legion post 285.  Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.watsonfh.net.
