Robert Kermit Freeman, known to many as Uncle Bob, a devoted patriot and cherished family member, passed away at 9:27 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was 79 years old.

Bob was born on February 5, 1945, in LaSalle, Illinois, to Kermit F. and Florence F. (Nagel) Freeman of Tonica, IL. He graduated from Lostant High School and attended Illinois Valley Community College. A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, he served with honor during the Vietnam War and was discharged on September 5, 1967. Following his military service, Robert enjoyed a successful career in lumber yards and building truss manufacturing companies across Mississippi, Texas, and Ohio, where he was known for his leadership and expertise, including his time at Wickes Lumber Yard.

In his high school days, Robert played the accordion in a family band with his brothers Roger and Ronnie, and his cousins Larry, Lynda, and Cheryl. He also loved riding the family quarter horses in gaming events and showing Holstein cattle in 4-H.

For the past 10 years, Bob resided in Pearland, Texas, where his niece Diane Freeman and her family live. During this time, he became a beloved fixture in the local community and was affectionately known to all as Uncle Bob. He was frequently seen dining out and engaging in lively conversations with friends at popular spots like Floyd's and Good Vibes.

In addition to his professional achievements, Uncle Bob was an active leader of the Jaycees (Junior Chamber International) group for young leaders while living in Ohio. He was a skilled handyman carpenter who enjoyed tackling home projects for himself and others over the years. A proud lifelong member of the Elks Club, his commitment to community and fellowship was a testament to his generous spirit.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert (Amy) Freeman of Galesburg; his granddaughter, Ashlyn; and his loyal service dog, Sarge. He is also survived by his brothers, Richard (Bonnie) Freeman and Randy Freeman, both of Lostant, Illinois; his sisters, Margie (Oscar) Van De Wyngaerde of Oglesby, Illinois, Marilyn (Jim) Loveland of Spring Valley, Illinois, and his former spouse Susan Bonura of Galva, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Ronnie and Roger Freeman.

A man deeply proud of his service to his country, Bob's patriotism was matched only by his love for God, family and friends. He was a lifelong learner with a passion for museums and documentaries, and he took great joy in collecting coins and exploring their history.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has been arranged. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg.
