Robert Loren Redfern, 100, of Galesburg, died peacefully on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Seminary Manor.
He was born to William “Mack” and Hazel (Brust) Redfern on July 16, 1924 in Burlington, Iowa. Robert was reared and educated in Galesburg, graduating from Galesburg High School in 1942. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp and held the position of base engineer. He married Audrey J. Burch on November 29, 1947 in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on July 2, 2012. Robert worked as a firefighter for the Galesburg Fire Department from 1955 to 1979. He also worked part-time as a surveyor for Bruner, Cooper & Zuck for 48 years. He also attended the University of Illinois for various fire science courses.
Left to cherish his memory is one son, Steve (Peggy) Redfern of Galesburg; one granddaughter, Lori Chase (Brian Rogers) of Galesburg; three grandsons: Brian (Emilie) Chase of North Fort Myers, Florida, Matt (Jolene) Redfern of San Diego, California, and Brad (Erin) Redfern of Abingdon, Illinois; and six great-grandchildren: Cobi Chase of North Fort Myers, Carter and Brody Redfern of Abingdon, Illinois, Celia, Malcolm, and Lenna Redfern of San Diego. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Audrey; one daughter, Lindsey Chase; and three brothers: Bill, Jack, and Jim Redfern.
Robert was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the I.A.F.F., A.F.F.I, and Fire Union Local 555. Robert was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan. He enjoyed gardening, gambling, and wood working. If somebody needed something built from wood, Robert could do it. He built many garages, room additions, decks and patios with fellow firefighters. He and Audrey liked to travel, visiting various places such as Tunica, Mississippi; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Burtonwood, England for Air Corp reunions. Robert was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone he met. He also enjoyed going to his grandkids sporting events and his great grandkids activities. Robert was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Cremation will be accorded. A memorial visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 2, 2024 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg. Burial with military rites will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Legion.
