Shirley Campbell Dadonna, 91, of Galesburg Illinois died February 24, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, after a brief illness.
Shirley was born August 14, 1932, at home in Athens Township Pennsylvania to the late Robert Campbell and Rosamund (Rice) Rubert. She graduated from Athens, PA High School Class of 1950, and received her undergraduate degree from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in 1955. While attending MU she met the love of her life Jack, and they were married on June 25, 1955, and spent 62 wonderful years side by side until his passing in 2017. After a brief teaching stint in Sayre, PA (SHS) they decided to travel to “Happy Valley” and in 1964 they both received graduate degrees from Penn State University, and then they subsequently moved and settled in Galesburg where they became valued members of the community. Shirley was a teacher in District 205 at several locations, and after her working retirement she served her community through government as a Knox County commissioner. Shirley was an avid stamp collector, among other things, but her one true passion was her involvement in the AAUW – American Association of University Women at both the local and state level – and their mission of advancing equity for woman’s rights. Jack and Shirley were kindred spirits who traveled and enjoyed the world together.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Jack L. Daddona, her brother, Donald E. Campbell Sr., nephews, Donald E. Campbell Jr. and Stephen D. Campbell. She is survived by her sister-in-law Lucy R. Campbell of Sayre, PA, nephews Scott D. (Mary) Campbell of Dade City FL, Douglas L. (Michelle) Campbell of York PA, and Mark Bush of Corning NY, and nieces Pamela (Chad) Grimm of Guilford NY, and Gina Metcalf of Corning NY. She is also survived by many great and great-great nephews and nieces.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no local services, and Shirley will be interred in Athens, PA joining her beloved Jack at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg, Illinois
