Valerie Smith, 66, of Wataga, died peacefully surrounded by her family at 1:35 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2016 at her home in Wataga. Valerie was born June 29, 1950 in Galesburg, the daughter of Augie and Lucille Eggland DeLuca. She married Neil Smith on December 24, 1991 in Galesburg. He preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Dave) McCommons of Galesburg and Jodi (Chuck) Eagle of Normal; a sister, Renee Zefo of Galesburg; three granddaughters, Lauren (Caleb) Ollman, and Zoe and Emma Eagle; one great granddaughter, Aubree Ollman; and one great grandson, Logan Ollman. She is also survived by a niece, Jenna Benson of Monmouth and a nephew, Zac Zefo of Galesburg. Along with her husband, Valerie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother in law, Bob Zefo. Valerie graduated from Galesburg High School in 1968. Following graduation she spent 42 years in food service. Starting in 1966 at her Dad’s restaurant, Augie’s Airport Inn on Henderson St. then working at Harbor Lights, and the Steak House. She also worked at several local bars and lastly at Jumer’s/Best Western for 24 years. She then worked at Western Illinois Home Health for 5 years and finally for Galesburg School District 205. Valerie loved to garden, scrapbook, cook, sewing, and crocheting. But mostly she loved being with her family, especially the grandkids and great grandkids whom she loved dearly. Per her wishes cremation rites will be accorded and no services will be held. Interment of cremated remains will be at a later date at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fish Food Pantry, PO Box 1922, Galesburg, IL 61401.
