Vincent Alvarez Luna, 91, of Galesburg, Illinois, died Friday, January 10, 2025 at Carle Health Methodist Hospital, Peoria, Illinois.


Vince was born April 4, 1933, in Galesburg, the son of Juan and Lenora (Mejia) Luna. In 1953, Vince enlisted in the US Army, serving in Korea, and was honorably discharged on January 6, 1955. Shortly after, Vince and V. Patricia Vallejo were married in East Moline, Illinois, on April 16, 1955. Pat preceded Vince in death on March 28, 2019.


Vince is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Mark) Sellner of Sarasota, Florida and Annette Luna of Mesa, Arizona; one grandson, Vincent (Savannah) Sellner of Dallas, Texas; one great grandson, Augustus Sellner; and one sister, Alberta Vega of Galesburg. Along with his wife and parents, Vince was preceded in death by a son, Gary Vincent Luna; three sisters, Margaret Jimenez, Toney Luna, Avelina Vargas; and five brothers, Frank Mejia, Tony Luna, Carlos Luna, James Luna, and Jesse Luna.


A lifelong welder, Vince worked a few years at Butler Mfg. and the railroad, but spent 37 ½ years, working as a welder at Maytag, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and past members of Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post #285 and Galesburg Lodge #880 Loyal Order of the Moose. Always one to enjoy a conversation, Vince never met a stranger and everyone he met became a friend. He loved to work with his hands, from handyman work, especially carpentry, and enjoyed working in the yard.


Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, January 16, 2025 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. The rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2025 at Corpus Christi Church, Galesburg. Father Jeffrey Stirniman will officiate. Burial with military rites provided by Knox County Honor Guard will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Galesburg. Immediately following burial, a luncheon will be at the McAteer Center at Corpus Christi Church. All are welcome. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
