View Edie's Tribute Video Virginia “Edie” Edith Spence, 93, of Galesburg, formerly of Avon, IL, died at 3:47 a.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Seminary Manor, Galesburg. Edie was born on March 25, 1922 in Kimberly, MN, the daughter of George Wayne and Eva Gladys Cafferty VanWinkle.  After high school, Edie attended and graduated from Cottage School of Nursing.  She married Milo “Mike” Lee Spence on March 1, 1947 in Avon.  He preceded her in death on their 59th wedding anniversary, March 1, 2006.  Edie is survived by her son, Joe (Christine) Spence of Galesburg; one sister, Margie Seasly of Joliet; one grandson, Joel (Alana) Brown; one great granddaughter, Sienna Brown and one great grandson, Brody Brown.  Along with her husband, Edie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters. Edie worked as a nurse until the birth of her son.  Once she became a parent, she was a homemaker and worked as a seamstress out of her home.  Edie also worked at Doyle’s Gift Shop in Galesburg for a time.  She was a devoted member of Faith Baptist Church; enjoyed sewing and was well known for the beautiful quilts she made.  Edie was also a fabulous pie maker and loved to travel with her siblings. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg.  No funeral services are planned at this time.  Cremation rites will be performed following visitation.  Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date in Avon Cemetery, Avon, IL.  Memorials may be made to Faith Baptist Church. The family would like to thank the staff and care teams of Hawthorne Inn and Seminary Manor for the loving care they provided to Edie.
