William W. “Bill” Bivens, 84, of Galesburg, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Rosewood Care Center, Galesburg. Bill was born September 18, 1933 in Avon, the son of Claire and Nettie Mills Bivens. He graduated from Avon High School. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He married Theresa Glasnovich on February 17, 1962 in Galesburg. He is survived by his wife, Theresa of Galesburg; three sons, Phillip of Naperville, Patrick (Lynn) of Bartonville, and John (Lynne) of Yorkville; one brother, Robert (Gayla) Bivens of Salem, VA; along with eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Marjorie “Marge” McElhiney, Dorothy “Dot” Strode, and Margaret “Peg” Luper. Bill was a self employed insurance broker for over 50 years. He was a member and past commander of Avon American Legion, and a life member of Abingdon American Legion Post #381 and VFW Post #2257. Bill was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Bill loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed golfing, bowling, and pinochle. A memorial mass will be 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with Rev. William T. Miller officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Galesburg. Arrangements have been entrusted to Watson-Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory, Galesburg. Memorials may be made to the VFW Post#2257, Abingdon American Legion Post#381 or the Defender’s of Freedom Veterans Home.
